Not many get a choice of baby. Perhaps that’s just as well.
For looking at each page, as yet unsullied, how are we to tell
What time and our own actions will inscribe? There’s heredity
That many think the pointer. I say, ‘No!’ For surely they must see,
Beyond glib stereotype, that infamy and saintly grace,
Stupidity and genius rare have no regard for race.
True…parents’ genes determine build and maybe temperament
Yet random combination makes each offspring different.
A hospital, prospective parents with a problem to decide
Between two baby girls. There was really nothing else to guide
Their choice but looks but fate stepped in to help. They had a chosen name,
‘Kathryn’. The first crib fetched and there it was, and spelt the same.
A slight imposture there, her true name Michelle Anne, the ‘Kathryn’
Penned by mothers giving suck. No need to have the next child in.
Coincidence or sign, this was the one. And time has brought about
No regret for the foundling left unseen, no might-have-beens, no doubt.
