Gramps has a jar of toffees on the shelf above the sink
And when we’ve done the dishes, we have one to celebrate.
Then, if it’s after breakfast, he will say, “What do you think,
Shall we totter to the Dairy for a paper?” I say, “Great!”
We both pretend that’s why we go, but Gramps just loves ice cream.
He always gets us double scoops and what a funny sight,
That busy tongue, those sticky hands, his grin a face-wide beam.
I’m sure he takes me as excuse to make it all look right.
And Gramps has slabs of shop-made cake with icing thick as thick
They come out when we have a drink and he says, “Have some more.”
Not like my Mum who thinks that too much cake will make me sick.
She says that he just spoils me. Surely that’s what Gramps are for!
