You should have seen that cake! It was even better than last year’s!

My buddy Pyotr’s mother, Mrs, Roslyakova, works for Creative Cakes who call themselves “Artists in Icing” and make fantastic wedding cakes for very rich families. Once-in-a-life-time cakes that almost need a forklift to move them. You may have seen them in magazines or on T.V.

This cake was in the form of an eight-sided house and each side was different. Different windows, different doors, different vines climbing up them and on the vines were these dainty little icing flowers in all sorts of colours. The roof was thick brown icing scalloped to look like tiles and on it were the eight chimneys to hold the expected candles.

Pyotr blew out the candles with one gale-force puff and the cake was ready to cut even though it might seem a shame to cut a cake like that. I wish that my mum would go to that much trouble for me.

I was nearly full to bursting by then with fizzy drink and ice cream and some of everything else on the tables but Mrs. Roslyakova’s cakes are not just beautiful they’re also yummy, yummy, yummy, so I asked if I could have a super big piece.

They’d call me a greedy pig at home but Mrs. Roslyakova just smiled and thanked me for the complement and said that, after all, it was just once a year.
